In Minnesota, there are laws that state that blood samples cannot be used for research. However, many people disagree with that statement. Genetic privacy advocates believe that blood sample should not be taken at all unless parents "opt-in" to let them do that. This article seems to be on the con side of the genatic privacy argument.

Woman has first face transplant

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4484728.stm

GMFS Why Aren't they labeled?

http://impact.typepad.com/articles/2006/01/how_should_gene.html?cid=109149416#comment-109149416

This article talks about the fact that GMFS are not labeled in the United States. In many European countries, it is mandatory to label genetically modified foods, but it is only voluntary in this country. WHY!!!!!!!!!?????????? Well according to the article, mandating the labeling of GMFs can bring down profits in stores because consumers may perceive the labels as a "WARNING" and choose not to buy it. BUT! it's their right! The fact that GMFs are not labeled is ridiculous! Just propostrous!

If Gene Therapy Is the Cure, What Is the Disease?

http://www.bioethics.net/articles.php?viewCat=6&articleId=58

Stem Cell Cons (Arguments as to why it shouldn't happen)

http://media.www.thejambar.com/media/storage/paper324/news/2008/04/01/Opinion/Say-No.To.Embryonic.Stem.Cell.Research-3295342.shtml

Transgenic Animals:Enivormental and Health Concerns

http://www.alive.com/4064a3a2.php?subject_bread_cramb=635

This article expresses the enviromental and health concerns of transgenic animals. It at the same time explains the need for transgenic animals. Transgenic animals can be used for organ transplants, meat production, diary production, diesase resistance and et cetera. However there are worries that that transgenic animals are capable of mating with wild stock. One transgenic animal that is being approved for food is the AquAdvantage salmon. In fact according to this article, escapes from fish farms are common. Also safety regulations covering the enviromental and health concerns over transgennic animals have not yet been finalized.

If Gene Therapy Is the Cure, What Is the Disease?

http://www.bioethics.net/articles.php?viewCat=6&articleId=58

Catherine's Article on antiretroviral medications

Deliver AIDS Treatment and Prevention

https://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/355/11/1081

The researchers believe that if they get expose to the antiretroviral medications to uninfected persons who are at high risk will prevent infection. These drops of vblood were taken to help determine whether or not this child has any of the 50 rare hereditary conditions that could be detected and treated. Minnesota doctors say that this saves many lives. However, some argue that this is an invasion of privacy. Doctors want to add other diseases to the newborn screening test. One parent, Ella, thinks that this test should not be optional. So basically, this article is leaning towards the pro side of the argument.
http://www.grist.org/advice/possessions/2000/04/21/possessions-genetic/

This article is about how GMF's are produced. Specifically corn, potatoes and and cotton; they are made to produce their own pesticides. Other ways that genes are produced are by splitting genes and inserting them into other organisms.
Other interesting facts are that:
-squash and papaya can fight diseases (b/c of genes from a virus)
-specific hormone can boost milk production in cows
-Salmon has been modified to to use more of their own growth hormones so they can increase in size, thus making the world's Salmon population much larger.

Volvo Speaks Out Against Biodiesels

http://www.channel4.com/4car/news/news-story.jsp?news_id=2240

Against Biodiesels

http://www.sovereignty.org.uk/features/eco/fuelines.html

hit up that link to read the article. He also states that he wants medical research to go forward without an individual fearing personal discrimination. This bill may finally give Americans the protection they need to benefit from gene-based medicine.

GM Foods

http://www.agbioworld.org/biotech-info/articles/agbio-articles/gm-crop-role.html

Laboratory Reports due Tuesday

Dear Biotechnology students,

My son has a 102.5 F fever and asthma (much like "Tina"),
and I cannot be at school. Fortunately, Catherine has
created this excellent blog!

Please go to the web-site: apchemistryob.googlepages.com
On the "Biotechnology" page, you will find the link for
the Transformation and Elisa procedures. They are quite
lengthy (over 15 pages), and you do NOT need to write (or copy)
the whole procedure. A brief 2-3 paragraph SUMMARY of the
procedure will be sufficient.

Enjoy the 3 day weekend, and please pass this information
along to your classmates!
Thank you,
~Mrs. Drurey
